Manchuria.

£450 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books · No longer available

The scarce 1920 handbook on Manchuria, issued during Zhang Zuolin's rule as Manchuria tried to establish its independence from both China and Japan, and is clearly being treated here by European countries as its own nation. This series of handbooks was originally drawn up in 1917 for the British Delegates who would attend the Paris Peace Conference to give them helpful information on whichever nation they would treat with. The text of the handbook was not altered to reflect the world post the end of WWI, but instead shows how the region was understood in 1917, including a list of treaties from 1689 to 1916 and a comprehensive survey of the region's economy. Only 6 copies in UK institutions and not in Cambridge or BL. First public edition; 8vo (21.5 x 14 cm); original printed wrappers, a little wear, light crease to upper wrapper, a very good copy; viii, 87pp.
