the kernel of the nut A very interesting letter from the great Nile explorer and adventurer, Samuel Baker in which he discusses the importance of maps in travel books, writing 'without which a book of travel is worthless', and that if the map has gone missing, 'it has lost the kernel of the nut i.e. the route'. Three-page autograph letter, signed, to an unnamed correspondent. Together with a photograph of Baker, framed and glazed.
