In this collection, Rhees works out what he had learned from Wittgenstein’s personal teaching and from his study of Ludwig’s published and unpublished works. Rhees’ exposition of Wittgenstein’s views are sometimes presented in previously published reviews of books by or about Ludwig. Others are independent discussions of special points in Wittgenstein’s philosophy. But, most important, the longest article here, ‘On Continuity: Wittgenstein’s Ideas, 1938’ is the first publication ever of Rhees’ report (often taken from notes he made in 1938) on his conversations with Wittgenstein theses on ‘continuity’ both inside and outside of mathematics.
