Complete Poems and Prose.

£6,500 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

The definitive lifetime edition of Whitman’s works, number 107 of 600 hundred copies boldly signed by the author on the Leaves of Grass title page, with the manuscript limitation statement by the editor Horace Traubell in red ink on the verso. According to Myerson, 150 unbound sheets of the first edition were sent for sale in England between August 1890 and November 1891, making the present contemporary binding by Hatchards particularly pleasing (Myerson, p. 128). Contents bright and unmarked, binder’s stamp of ‘Hatchards, Piccadilly’ to verso of front free endpaper, spine only slightly faded, a few faint splash marks to spine and front cover, light wear to front joint, notwithstanding a really excellent copy. Myerson, A 2.7.m.
