All ten stories had previously appeared in serials, though six had been heavily bowdlerized for their appearance in the 1890 Christmas number of the Graphic, three of them "to a remarkable extent" (Purdy). In the 1880s Hardy began to publish his short magazine fiction in book form, and this was the second collection to be released.
