The Night of the Hunter. Presentation copy, signed by the stars of the 1955 film adaptation to Don Cash, a make-up artist who worked on the film. Signatures include that of the producer Paul Gregory ("To Don, who kept the powder flying"), the director Charles Laughton ("For Don, all the best"), and the actor Billy Chapin ("To Don, my best friend"). Cash's ownership inscription is on the front pastedown. Accompanying the book is a payslip for Cash from Cascade Pictures of California. The film was a commercial and critical failure on its release, and Laughton never directed a film again. It is now considered a classic, and in 1992 the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in its National Film Registry. The Night of the Hunter was Grubb's first novel, published in 1953. Gregory obtained the film rights before the book was published; this was his first film production, after having worked as a theatre producer in New York. This edition was published in April 1954.
