Billy Liar. First edition, inscribed by the authors on the half-title verso and title page: "For Clive Hirschhorn, Willis Hall" and "Keith Waterhouse for Clive Hirschhorn". Hirschhorn (b. 1940) was the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express for over three decades; his 1961 ownership inscription is on the front pastedown.The play was first performed in 1960 at the Cambridge Theatre, London, starring Albert Finney; a programme for the production is loosely inserted. Based on Waterhouse's 1959 novel of the same name, the play was adapted into a film in 1963, directed by John Schlesinger, in which Finney reprised the title role and Julie Christie featured as his girlfriend Liz, her breakthrough role.
