'Kane, on board the Advance, was commander of this expedition, which was financed by Grinnell. Franklin was not found; however, much data concerning the Eskimo, geography, and scientific information was gathered. Kane, passing up Smith Sound at the head of Baffin Bay, advanced into the enclosed sea which now bears the name of Kane Basin, thus establishing the Polar route of many future Arctic expeditions' (Hill).
