Goblin Market. First Housman edition, trade issue. This fantastical narrative poem, which was first published in 1862 with illustrations by Christina's brother Dante Gabriel, has eluded classification, having been interpreted variously as a feminist tract, a critique of capitalism, an allegory for drug addiction, and a children's story. Laurence Housman (1865-1959) worked in an intricate art nouveau style. The brother of the poet A. E. Housman and author and suffragette Clemence Housman, Laurence was a writer himself and co-founded the Men's League for Women's Suffrage. His design for this book was exhibited at the London Arts and Crafts Exhibition in October 1893 in advance of the book's publication in December.
