The French Lieutenant's Woman. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Gary Leppen, with the author's best warm wishes, John Fowles, 15.10.1969". A postmodern example of the historical-fiction genre, the novel was inspired by Lyme Regis, Fowles's home from 1965. He began writing it at Underhill Farm, later moving to a Georgian mansion named Belmont, where he finished it. Both locations were used in the 1981 film adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.
