Internally fresh example of the first edition of this richly illustrated work, published again in 1916 and 1917. It details and illustrates a military exhibition held in the St. Petersburg Admiralty during the summer 1915. Its aim was to instil a patriotic spirit and encourage support for Russia's involvement in WWI, whilst also relaying the realities of the terrible conditions. The exhibition was a great success and attracted nearly half a million visitors in its opening weeks. Folio (37.6 x 28.5 cm); title, colour title, 72, [2] pp. 8 colour plates tipped-in on thicker board including two portraits, 7 black and white plates, some half-page, with many illustrations in text; one plate loose. Original publisher's cloth, double-headed eagle centrepiece to upper cover, spine lettered in gilt; rubbed at extremities, ends of spine chipped, some spotting to upper cover.
