A greatly expanded edition of and commentary on J. S. Rarey’s The Modern Art of Taming Horses (Columbus, Ohio: 1856). His method consisted of hobbling one of the horse’s fore-legs and then exhausting it. Its advantages over other systems are examined. Provenance: Ink presentation inscription on the front flyleaf “E W. Chapman from his friend John T. Backer September 1858”. Ink signature below: “E. W. Bagnall”.
