Published during the heart of the Revolutionary War, these prayers opens asking for “to strengthen [British forces] with thy powerful arm, and to crown with success their necessary endeavours by defeating the unjust attempts of their rebellious fellow-subjects against the rights of our Sovereign …” and, more specifically includes “A Prayer for our Enemies”, which addresses “our unhappy fellow-subjects in America, that seeing and confessing the error of their ways … they may again return to their duty and make themselves worthy of Thy pardon and forgiveness.” Furthermore, in the Evening Prayer, the “unhappy deluded subjects in American, now, in defiance of all subordination and legal government, in open rebellion against His crown.” Adams, 78-20a.
