Pauline. First edition in English, first impression. The House of Barnery trilogy was published as the Les destinées sentimentales between 1934 and 1936. Pauline, the second work, was published under the same title in French in 1934. The vibrant jacket is one of four commissioned from Ithell Colquhoun by Peter Owen between 1955 and 1956.Colquhoun (1906-1988) was a celebrated artist expelled from the English Surrealist Group for refusing to abandon her occult research. Recent years have seen a resurgence in critical interest in her work, and she "is becoming recognized as one of the most interesting and prolific esoteric thinkers and artists of the twentieth century" (Hale). Examples of her work as an illustrator and jacket designer are uncommon in such bright condition.
