Anno Domini 2000; or, Woman's Destiny. First colonial edition of this prime example of Victorian speculative fiction, which anticipates "the British Empire of the future, politically, sociologically and scientifically" (Locke, p. 220) and imagines a world in which women have achieved emancipation. The colonial edition of Anno Domini 2000 is bound in grey pictorial cloth and likely preceded the domestic UK edition, issued in tan cloth, by several months. It was common practice for publishers to issue the colonial edition in advance so that it would be available at the same time as in the UK. The upcoming publication of this novel was announced in a newspaper for British residents in Australasia in November 1888 and the book was available from February. By 1890, Hutchinson had already issued a third, "cheaper", edition.Vogel (1835-1899) was involved in the local and national politics of New Zealand for many years, holding the position of premier in the 1870s. Likely influenced by his wife Mary Clayton, he was in favour of women's education and introduced a women's suffrage bill in parliament in 1887.
