ROWLING, J. K., as Robert Galbraith.
£1,500 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available
The Cuckoo's Calling. Uncorrected proof copy. Proof copies of Rowling's first pseudonymously published crime novel are comparatively rare: Errington failed to consult one for his bibliography. It had not been Rowling's intention for her authorship to be revealed only three months after publication, and this proof copy is part of the elaborate bibliographical history of the first novel in the Cormoran Strike series. The novel was accepted by the publishers "entirely on its own merits" (Errington, p. 576). It was assumed to be a first novel by an unpublished author, however, the proof reveals that the publishers intended "an international publicity campaign". Errington records the view of the publisher that they would "usually do two or three hundred [proof copies] and those would go out for review purposes and to booksellers."
