A Poetical Translation of the Elegies of Tibullus; And of the Poems of Sulpicia. First Grainger edition, nicely bound. The editor James Grainger (c.1721-1766) was a Scotsman and an army surgeon during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Samuel Johnson told James Boswell that Grainger "was a man who would do any good in his power. His translation of Tibullus, he thought was very well done" (Boswell, p. 699). Albius Tibullus (c.55BCE-19BCE) was a celebrated Roman elegiac poet whose poems are often included with Sulpicia's six short elegies, "the only extant poems by a Roman woman in the Classical era" (Fulkerson).
