A cornerstone work in American literature First American edition of one of the great literary classics: "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn" (Ernest Hemingway, p. 22). This copy has the three points distinguishing the first printing: "Huck Decided to Leave" on p. 9, "Him and another Man" erroneously assigned to p. 88 on p. 13, and "with the was" on p. 57. The title and page 283 are in the corrected states as usual; the bust portrait is BAL's first state. Copies were issued in green or blue cloth, sheepskin, and half morocco. There is no priority as the whole first printing was issued together in February 1885; the British edition was published first to secure international copyright, in December 1884. Square octavo. Heliotype portrait of Karl Gerhardt's bust of Twain, with tissue guard; frontispiece and in-text illustrations by E. W. Kemble. Original green pictorial cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in black and gilt. Contemporary ownership inscription of Kate H. Prince (1856-1938) of Webster, Massachusetts on rear free endpaper recto. Light rubbing and fraying at extremities, contents clean: a very good, unrepaired copy.
