(7 5/8 x 5"). 58, [2] pp. Preface by Frank Belknap Long. Original black Arkham House cloth, spine lettered in gilt. In (slightly dampstained) custom morocco-backed slipcase. Printed on paper watermarked "Canterbury Laid." Verso of title page with printed copyright statement of Arkham House pasted on. Head and tail edge of text block with faint stamp of Spokane Community College. Joshi A5; Brennan, p. 1. Gilt lettering a bit rubbed, one upper corner a little bumped, but the binding otherwise just as it should be. Printed on inexpensive paper, so text with overall faint browning and (insignificant) tears and small chips in a couple of places (including two chips on the title page), though well away from the text. Everything else quite in order, and the copy as a whole attractive, being especially fresh and clean internally. The rarest Arkham House book and the ultimate prize for a Lovecraft collector, this is a desirable copy of the original weird fiction novelist's "stillborn" first book. This tale of a cursed and monster-infested house was printed by W. Paul Cook at the Recluse Press in a run of 300 copies in 1928. Then, in terms of publication history, things got complicated, as no copies were bound or distributed. It would have been the only book by American horror legend H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) to be issued in his
